Three years ago vetran Brian Cody could barely walk from an injury. He went to Veterans Life Changing Services in Gary, a transition house for veterans, where he recuperated and started catering meals, capturing some big jobs. Now, Cody wants to help other veterans find work and learn entrepreneurial skills by opening the Veterans Cafe and Grill at 7805 Taft St.

“The goal is to offer help for veterans to reintegrate them into mainstream society,” Cody said. Cody has a culinary arts degree and did food service work in the military. Bessie Hitchcock, director of operations for Veterans Life Changing Services and part-owner of the cafe and grill, said memorabilia will also be sold at the business. “This will give veterans the opportunity to become entrepreneurs,” she said.

Portions of the proceeds generated by the restaurant will be used to assist homeless veterans. 20 percent of veterans are homeless.

Veterans Life Changing Services gets no government funding and relies solely on donations.
